فتحت السلطات الأمريكية تحقيقاً واسعاً في مدينة شيكاغو بعد العثور على أكثر من 50 جثماناً مخزناً بأساليب غير ملائمة وفي حالات متفاوتة من التحلل داخل دار «ساوث شيكاغو تشابل» للجنائز، إثر بلاغات من السكان المحليين بشأن انبعاث روائح كريهة من المبنى.
وأوضح مكتب الفاحص الطبي في مقاطعة كوك أن فرقه تعمل بالتعاون مع المسؤولين المحليين على فحص الرفات ومطابقتها مع وثائق وشهادات الوفاة لتحديد الهويات، مشيراً إلى أن هذه العملية قد تستغرق عدة أيام.
وعلى خلفية الحادثة، أصدرت إدارة التنظيم المالي والمهني في ولاية إلينوي قراراً بتعليق ترخيص مديرة الدار يوهانا مورغان مؤقتاً، بعد ثبوت سماحها بحفظ الجثامين في ظروف مزرية ودون تبريد، إذ رصد المحققون انتشاراً للقوارض واليرقات داخل المنشأة، ما أدى إلى تسارع تحلل الجثامين. وأكدت السلطات أن هذا الإجراء جاء لدرء خطر داهم يهدد السلامة العامة.
وبحسب السجلات الرسمية، أُسست دار الجنائز عام 2022 برئاسة زوج المديرة، كلارك مورغان، الذي سُحبت رخصته المهنية عام 2024 إثر مخالفات ومزاولة العمل برخصة منتهية. وفي الوقت الذي تواصل شرطة شيكاغو تحقيقاتها المكثفة لكشف ملابسات الواقعة، لم تُعلن السلطات حتى الآن عن توقيف أي شخص أو توجيه تهم رسمية.
The U.S. authorities have opened a wide-ranging investigation in Chicago after discovering more than 50 bodies stored inappropriately and in varying states of decomposition inside the "South Chicago Chapel" funeral home, following reports from local residents about foul odors emanating from the building.
The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office stated that its teams are working in cooperation with local officials to examine the remains and match them with documents and death certificates to determine identities, noting that this process may take several days.
In light of the incident, the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation issued a decision to temporarily suspend the license of the funeral home director, Johanna Morgan, after it was confirmed that she allowed the bodies to be stored under deplorable conditions and without refrigeration. Investigators noted the presence of rodents and larvae inside the facility, which led to the accelerated decomposition of the bodies. Authorities confirmed that this action was taken to avert an imminent danger to public safety.
According to official records, the funeral home was established in 2022 under the leadership of the director's husband, Clark Morgan, whose professional license was revoked in 2024 due to violations and practicing with an expired license. While the Chicago police continue their intensive investigations to uncover the circumstances of the incident, authorities have not yet announced the arrest of any individuals or the filing of official charges.
