The International Football Federation (FIFA) is preparing to introduce a new tradition to the World Cup by awarding the winning team of the 2026 edition a commemorative champion ring for the first time in the tournament's history, just before the final match between Argentina and Spain on Sunday evening at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, USA.
According to media reports, FIFA has allocated 30 exclusive rings for the members of the winning team, inspired by the traditions of some American sports tournaments, notably the National Basketball Association (NBA), where players and coaching staff receive commemorative rings after winning the championship.
The initiative is not limited to the champion team; FIFA has also decided to produce an additional 1,996 rings to be sold to the public, with each ring accompanied by a certificate of authenticity and made to the buyer's size, describing it as a "new symbol of victory" in the history of the World Cup.
Controversy Over Prices and Revenues
This move has sparked widespread controversy among football fans, after the British newspaper The Sun revealed that the price of the ring could reach £112,000, while the prices for this type of gold ring adorned with gemstones range between £7,400 and £112,000, depending on the design and materials used.
According to estimates, selling all the rings available to the public could generate revenues exceeding £200 million, prompting some fans to criticize the decision, considering it reflects an increasing trend towards maximizing commercial revenues associated with the tournament.
On the other hand, supporters of the idea believe it gives fans the opportunity to acquire a commemorative piece linked to the most significant football event in the world and adds a new tradition to the tournament's history.
A Series of Innovations
The introduction of the champion ring is part of a series of changes that the 2026 World Cup has witnessed, which has sparked extensive discussion, including the adoption of water breaks during some matches held in hot conditions, as well as organizing a halftime show during the final match featuring several global stars, an unprecedented step in the history of the World Cup finals.
Since the World Cup's inception in 1930, the trophy and gold medals have remained the most prominent official symbols of victory awarded to the winning team, and FIFA has never adopted the tradition of awarding a "champion ring" as is practiced in some American tournaments, particularly the NBA and the NFL.
This step reflects FIFA's direction towards creating commemorative products and new experiences related to the tournament, amid the significant growth of commercial and marketing revenues from the World Cup, which has become one of the most financially lucrative sporting events worldwide.
