The Brazilian player Fabinho Tavares, star of Al-Ittihad, spoke to the British newspaper "The Guardian" about the behind-the-scenes of his transfer to the team in the summer of 2023 after five successful seasons with Liverpool, during which he contributed to bringing the Premier League title back to the "Reds" after a 30-year absence and winning the Champions League after 14 years without it.
Fabinho said in his interview with the newspaper: "I didn't want to leave Liverpool; I saw it as the best place in the world to continue and develop as a player. However, our last season was tough and exhausting. We didn't achieve good results, and we failed to qualify for the Champions League. I also lost my starting position in some matches."
He added: "When Al-Ittihad made an offer for me, and Liverpool officials informed me that it was a good offer for the club and for me as well, I was waiting for the coaching staff's decision. I believed I was an important player, but I realized that the club was open to the idea of selling me. Coach Jurgen Klopp called me and asked about my desire, and I told him that I had heard the offer and liked it, but I wanted to know his opinion. He said that if any player wanted to leave, he wouldn't stand in their way, and that was an open signal to leave."
Fabinho continued: "That conversation could have kept me at the club, but it left the door open, and I didn't like that. Liverpool is a club I love, but what happened at that time directed my life towards Saudi Arabia. I left peacefully and am happy with my decision."
Fabinho also talked about his aspirations to participate in the upcoming World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico in 2026, saying: "My goal is to play in the World Cup, and I work daily to achieve it. I performed well last season, which made me happy because I showed the abilities that allow me to play again in the Brazilian national team jersey."
He touched on the French coach Laurent Blanc, saying: "Laurent is a great coach; I am impressed by how he communicates with the players. However, if you ask me who the best coach I have played under is, I would choose the one I won with the most, and that is Klopp."
Regarding his plans after retirement, he clarified: "I have taken some courses that qualify me to be a coach, which I started at Liverpool, but I haven't completed them yet. What will happen after I finish them? I don't know, but I enjoy delving into this game, which makes me more demanding."
Fabinho concluded his interview by talking about his future: "I am happy at Al-Ittihad and love the atmosphere here, but the Brazilian league is an option, and I also want to return to Europe and compete again for the Champions League title. The Premier League is still the best in the world, but I might choose a country I haven't played in before."
