The Romanian coach Cosmin Olaroiu expressed his pride in the fighting spirit shown by the UAE national team players, which contributed to their victory over Oman 2-1 in the first group of the Asian qualifiers - the road to the 2026 World Cup.
Olaroiu said in the press conference held after the match, published by the Asian Football Confederation on its official website: "The match was very difficult, and I congratulate the players for their determination and resolve in achieving the victory, which is a deserved and fair win that puts us at the top of the group."
The UAE national team now only needs to avoid losing to Qatar on Tuesday to secure a spot in the World Cup finals next year. I also thank our fans for their great support throughout the match.
Olaroiu brought on both Caio Canedo and Yahya Nader, along with Harib Abdullah, to strengthen the team's attacking power during the second half. He said: "I had to make a comprehensive tactical change at the beginning of the second half to change the players' mentality and achieve victory. We played two halves with different personalities, but we did everything necessary to win the match. Now we have the decisive confrontation against Qatar."
On the other hand, Oman’s hopes of qualifying for the World Cup for the first time are now linked to the result of the match between Qatar and the UAE, as the second-placed team in the group will qualify for a playoff against the runner-up of the second group, with the winner getting a final chance through the global playoff.
Oman coach Carlos Queiroz said after the match: "Our players created many chances but were unable to capitalize on them. However, they deserved a better result, and our chances of qualifying are still alive. Our fans should be proud of the great effort and high fighting spirit shown by the players despite all the challenges."
