The Israeli occupation authorities have imposed a complete closure on the West Bank and the crossings of the Gaza Strip for 3 days starting from (Monday), citing security considerations related to the commemoration of the events of October 7.
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant announced on (Sunday) his approval of the Israeli army's recommendation regarding the closure, based on an assessment of the security situation, to be implemented on the specified days, according to Israeli Channel 14.
Exceptions in Limited Cases
The Israeli decision stipulated that no exceptions would be allowed for crossing in the West Bank except in specific cases, allowing the passage of essential workers in the health sector, alongside cases related to commitments made by Israel before the Supreme Court, or needs related to the contact area. The exceptions are subject to the approvals of the relevant Israeli authorities, according to the assessment of each case. Israel had imposed a general closure on the West Bank in late September, coinciding with the Feast of Tabernacles, based on the army's recommendation and security assessments.
Siege, Destruction, and Mass Displacement
These measures come ahead of the third anniversary of the October 7, 2023 attacks, which began that morning with a wide-ranging assault launched by Hamas and Palestinian factions from the Gaza Strip on Israeli towns and military sites, coinciding with the launch of thousands of rockets. Israel announced war the following day and began a wide military campaign on the Gaza Strip, which included airstrikes and ground and naval operations. The Israeli authorities imposed a siege on the devastated sector, which included halting supplies of electricity, water, and fuel, as well as the entry of goods. The fighting led to widespread destruction and mass displacement of the population, according to United Nations reports.
Israeli Elections at the End of October
According to the latest toll, the number of Palestinian casualties since the start of the war has risen to 74,228, while the number of injured has reached 175,188, according to the Palestinian news agency. The toll includes 1,445 fatalities since the ceasefire came into effect in October 2025. The current closure measures come ahead of the Israeli elections scheduled for October 27, 2026, to elect members of the 26th Knesset, in the first general Israeli elections since the October 7, 2023 attack. The 25th Knesset was dissolved in July 2026, paving the way for the upcoming elections.
