The Netherlands expressed, today (Monday), its regret over Israel's decision to revoke the diplomatic accreditation of Dutch officials working in the West Bank, a move that Israel said was in response to Dutch sanctions targeting products from Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories.
Dutch Foreign Minister Tom Berendsen stated that his country "strongly regrets" the Israeli decision, describing it as "unnecessary," and emphasizing that The Hague's decision to suspend the import of goods coming from settlements in the West Bank "was not directed against Israel."
The Dutch government had announced earlier in September the implementation of a ban on the import of settlement products, as part of measures targeting goods coming from Israeli settlements in the West Bank.
Israel gives Dutch diplomats a 7-day deadline
The Israeli government announced on Sunday the revocation of the diplomatic status of Dutch diplomats representing their country to the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah, the administrative capital of the Palestinian Authority.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar stated that the move was in response to Dutch sanctions targeting Israeli settlements in the West Bank.
Sa'ar ordered the Dutch diplomats working in Ramallah to return the diplomatic documents issued by Israel within seven days, clarifying that the privileges and diplomatic immunities granted to them by Israel would end after this deadline.
Sa'ar said that Israel "will not ignore actions aimed at harming it," adding that any country that acts, as he described, "in an aggressive and unilateral manner against Israel will lose its influence and importance in the region."
What does the Dutch ban include?
The Dutch ban on settlement products came into effect on September 22 and includes commercial shipments as well as goods found in travelers' luggage.
Dutch and Israeli media reports in recent days indicated that Dutch authorities inspected the luggage of travelers arriving at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam from Israel, searching for products banned under the new measures.
This step comes in the context of increasing European and international measures regarding products coming from Israeli settlements in the West Bank.
Britain, France, and Canada in the picture
The crisis with the Netherlands follows a similar Israeli step towards Britain, as earlier in September, Israel ordered the closure of the British consulate in East Jerusalem, which represents the United Kingdom to the Palestinian Authority, following London's announcement of similar measures banning the import of settlement products.
France and Canada have also announced a ban on the import of settlement products; however, Israel had also prevented Dutch diplomats from entering a coordination center based in Israel and managed by the United States, designated for coordinating aid and operations related to the Gaza Strip, based on what has so far been described as similar measures against them.
In August, Israel had also prevented Dutch diplomats from entering a coordination center based in Israel and managed by the United States, designated for coordinating aid and operations related to the Gaza Strip, based on what Sa'ar described at the time as "anti-Israel actions."
The diplomatic escalation comes at a time when relations between Israel and several European countries are experiencing increasing tension over Israeli settlement policies in the West Bank and the measures taken by some European governments regarding products coming from the settlements.
