Some users of magnesium supplements report experiences of vivid dreams and nightmares that began after taking them, with one even comparing what they see during sleep to a "horror movie" in which they play the lead role. However, experts confirm that the available evidence does not prove that magnesium directly causes these dreams.
Magnesium is promoted as a sleep aid, although the evidence for its effectiveness in treating insomnia remains limited. It is an essential mineral for body functions and can be obtained from nuts, seeds, legumes, whole grains, and leafy vegetables.
Dr. Nikki Ramskill stated that vivid dreams are not a proven side effect of magnesium. She proposed a possible explanation that changes in sleep patterns for some individuals may make them remember their dreams more, especially those occurring during the rapid eye movement (REM) stage. However, this explanation does not establish a causal relationship between the supplement and nightmares.
Ramskill advised reviewing the contents of the package, as some supplements may contain vitamin "B6" or other ingredients, and to pay attention to any sleep disturbances that arise after starting them. It is also recommended that those with kidney issues or who take medications regularly consult a doctor before using magnesium supplements.
High doses of these supplements may lead to diarrhea, nausea, and abdominal cramps. If the dreams become disturbing or sleep disturbances persist, it is best to consult a doctor to evaluate the cause.
