More than a thousand settlers stormed the courtyards of the Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied Jerusalem today (Sunday), under heavy protection from the Israeli occupation police, coinciding with a complete closure of the West Bank and tightened military measures in conjunction with the Jewish "Feast of Tabernacles."
The Jerusalem Governorate reported that 1,143 settlers invaded the Al-Aqsa Mosque through the Mughrabi Gate during the morning incursions, including Knesset member Amit Halevi, while the settlers conducted tours inside the courtyards, performed Talmudic rituals, and brought in plant offerings.
In the West Bank, the occupation authorities announced the closure of the area and crossings until next Saturday, while the army deployed military reinforcements, reduced the leave of its forces, and raised the state of alert, amid Israeli fears of escalating clashes with expectations of hundreds of thousands of Israelis visiting the West Bank during the holiday.
The escalation coincided with a call from extremist Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich to launch a wide-ranging war in the West Bank and dismantle the Palestinian Authority, demanding the implementation of what he described as the "Gaza Strip model," and announcing the establishment of 22 new settlement outposts during last summer.
On the ground, the occupation forces closed several checkpoints and entrances to towns in northern Ramallah and northeast Jerusalem, leading to the detention of hundreds of vehicles for hours, while a girl was injured by the occupation's gunfire at the Qalandiya checkpoint.
In another context, settlers attacked the village of Abu Falah east of Ramallah and burned several citizens' vehicles, amid a rise in settlers' assaults on Palestinians and their properties in various areas of the West Bank.
