The battles in northern Ethiopia entered their sixth day today (Sunday), amid a rapidly escalating field confrontation between federal forces and their allies on one side, and the Tigray People's Liberation Front fighters and their armed opposition allies on the other, as the scope of the clashes expanded to include the regions of Tigray, Amhara, and Afar.
The Tigray People's Liberation Front announced its control over three towns in the neighboring Afar region, a development that opens a new front for fighting and raises fears of an escalation in the confrontations, especially since the region borders Djibouti and Eritrea and serves as an important corridor for trade in the area.
The head of the ruling party in the Afar region, Mohammed Hussein, stated that Tigray forces had advanced into the second and fourth areas of the region and seized control of three towns, noting that thousands of civilians are trapped inside them. Hussein accused the front of using civilians as human shields, calling on the federal government to take responsibility for protecting the region's residents, and affirming that Afar forces would take whatever measures they deem necessary to defend their territory.

Clashes between Afar forces and Tigray fighters are taking place along a front that extends approximately 80 to 90 kilometers, with the fiercest battles concentrated in the Afar region, where local forces and the Ethiopian army are trying to regain the towns that Tigray forces have captured.
In the city of Abala, which has a population of over 50,000, eyewitnesses reported that fighting continues and a siege has been imposed on the city, amid fears of a deterioration in humanitarian conditions. Media reports also mentioned the disruption of internet services in Tigray and northern areas, raising concerns about the region being digitally and financially isolated as fighting escalates.
The escalation follows the announcement of a coalition that includes the Tigray People's Liberation Front and six other armed groups active in Tigray and neighboring regions, which declared its goal of overthrowing Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's government. Over the past months, Addis Ababa has accused the front of strengthening its ties with armed groups in other regions, in addition to its rapprochement with Eritrea.
Yesterday, the Chief of Staff of the Ethiopian Army, General Berhanu Jula, accused the Tigray Front of seeking to push the country toward a new war, asserting that the army is exercising restraint in dealing with its movements, while indicating that the air force is using digital monitoring techniques to carry out precise strikes.
The United Nations has warned of the dangers of the escalation, with Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressing concern over reports related to the use of drones and civilian casualties, while the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, called on all parties to de-escalate tensions and avoid a return to large-scale hostilities.
The roots of the conflict trace back to the political role played by the Tigray Front, which ruled Ethiopia for decades after coming to power in 1991, before being marginalized following Abiy Ahmed's assumption of the premiership in 2018. Despite the peace agreement signed in Pretoria that ended the previous war, clashes renewed in late 2025, amid mutual accusations and military mobilization along the region's borders, while around one million people remain displaced in Tigray, with the terms of the peace agreement not being fully implemented.
