North Korea escalated its military activity today (Sunday) by launching a projectile towards the sea off its eastern coast, in a new step amid increasing tensions with the United States, South Korea, and Japan.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff in South Korea reported that the launch was detected off the eastern coast of North Korea, while the Japanese Ministry of Defense stated that the projectile appeared to be a ballistic missile, noting that it fell outside Japan's exclusive economic zone.
This new test comes days after Pyongyang launched about 10 short-range ballistic missiles towards the sea, following intensive military exercises that included missiles, artillery, and drones.
The military escalation coincides with North Korea's rejection of a resolution from the International Atomic Energy Agency regarding its nuclear program, while Pyongyang continued to criticize the military drills conducted by the United States with South Korea and Japan.
Kim Yo-jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, stated that the U.S.-led exercises increase tensions on the peninsula, reaffirming her country's commitment to enhancing its nuclear arsenal.
This comes despite U.S. President Donald Trump's move to reduce the scale of the annual exercise with South Korea, a step linked to his relationship with Kim Jong-un and efforts to revive the diplomatic track between Washington and Pyongyang.
However, North Korea confirmed that reducing the exercises does not change its position, while Kim Jong-un continues to push for the development of his country's nuclear and missile capabilities, following the collapse of nuclear negotiations with Trump in 2019.
