A simple beginning that did not hint at a cinematic ending, just a sudden breakdown of a woman's car was the reason for their acquaintance, transforming the human situation into an emotional bond, which later developed into a judicial drama that occupied public opinion. However, the case, which oscillated between heavy accusations of cyber extortion and claims of theft under threat of violence, ended at an unexpected resolution inside the Amman Court of Appeals.
The crisis escalated following sharp disagreements over photos sent by the woman via the "WhatsApp" application, including a picture in home attire. According to the plaintiff's allegations, the young man exploited that photo as a means of material and moral pressure, threatening to send it to her husband and family, and demanding an amount of 4,300 Jordanian dinars in exchange for refraining from publication. With the revelation of the relationship to the husband, divorce occurred, and the woman left the marital home with approximately 180 grams of gold jewelry.
The chapters of the story continued with the accused demanding 3,200 dinars to pay a lawyer's fees in a private case. The two parties indeed went to the law office to organize a power of attorney, but the disagreement turned into a confrontation inside the car, where the woman claimed that the young man prevented her from leaving the gold and money with the lawyer, then brandished a sharp object at her and assaulted her to force her to hand over all the jewelry under the threat of burning her house and harming her reputation.
The accusations later escalated to include the invasion of her studio, further assaulting her, and transferring money from her personal phone, before communication completely ceased and the woman discovered the sale of the gold with the involvement of the young man's family.
However, the court, while meticulously examining the documents and stages of interrogation, paused at notable points that weakened the legal value of the accusation:
Inconsistencies in amounts and details of the threat: The plaintiff's statements in the initial reports were contradictory, as she initially spoke of 5,000 dinars without mentioning any threats related to the "WhatsApp" photos, before returning to mention 4,300 dinars, then 3,200 dinars before the court.
Delayed narratives: Key events, such as the money transfer, the studio invasion, and the internal assault, were completely absent from the initial police statement and appeared in later stages of the case.
Timing of filing the complaint: The woman waited about three months to file her complaint, coinciding with the cessation of communication, and her knowledge of the young man's imprisonment in another case and the sale of the jewelry.
Absence of technical evidence: The technical examination of the extracted storage memory proved the absence of any electronic link connecting the young man to the messages or files that the plaintiff claimed existed.
In light of these gaps in the strength of the evidence, the Amman Court of Appeals concluded that the proposed evidence did not rise to the legal standard required to convict the accused. Accordingly, the court decided to overturn the first-instance ruling and declare the young man not guilty of theft (according to Article 401/3 of the Penal Code) and of cyber extortion (according to Article 18/b of the Cyber Crimes Law), closing the chapter on one of the most complicated emotional and judicial cases.
