A foul smell emanating from an apartment in Rodriguez municipality in the Philippines led to the discovery of one of the most mysterious incidents in recent weeks, after authorities found a woman's body hidden inside a refrigerator, amid suspicions surrounding her partner and potential motives related to money.
The story began when the property owner noticed an unusual odor seeping from one of the apartments, prompting him to notify the police, who arrived at the scene and opened the refrigerator to find the body of an unidentified woman at first. The Rodriguez police posted a picture of the victim on (Facebook) asking the public for help in identifying her, before her father later confirmed that she was his daughter; according to local media including (ABS-CBN).
The investigation quickly turned towards the victim's partner, whom the police described as a "person of interest," before he became a direct suspect, especially since he was already detained in connection with another case involving illegal detention, while the victim herself was facing a similar case and had been released on bail before her death.
Authorities are exploring the possibility of a financial dispute behind the crime, after the woman's father reported that she had been carrying a large amount of money before her disappearance, which led investigators to consider the hypothesis of a fight related to money. An initial examination revealed signs suspected to be related to strangulation on the victim's body, while police estimated that the death occurred about six to seven days before the body was discovered.
Investigators believe that placing the body inside the refrigerator was an attempt to slow down decomposition and delay the discovery of the incident, giving the responsible party more time to escape or cover their tracks. Authorities are still gathering evidence and reconstructing the complete sequence of events, without announcing any final charges yet.
