The Kosovo Specialized Court in The Hague ruled today (Wednesday) to sentence former Kosovo President Hashim Thaci to 25 years in prison after convicting him of war crimes committed during the conflict with Serbia between 1998 and 1999, including murder, torture, inhumane treatment, and arbitrary detention.
Thaci, who is 58 years old, was convicted as a prominent leader of the Kosovo Liberation Army for criminal responsibility in the killing of 96 individuals, the arbitrary detention of 385 others, the torture of 303 people, and the inhumane treatment of 49 individuals, according to the court's findings.
The court confirmed that the crimes targeted individuals considered opponents of the political and military objectives of the Kosovo Liberation Army, including Albanians linked to other political and military forces, individuals accused of being associated with Serbian authorities, as well as members of ethnic minorities.
In contrast, the court acquitted Thaci and three other former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army of charges of crimes against humanity, concluding that there was insufficient evidence to prove the existence of a widespread or systematic attack against the civilian population, and also acquitted them of several specific war crime incidents.
Thaci had resigned from the presidency of Kosovo in 2020 to face the charges and has consistently denied all allegations against him. The trial included three other defendants: Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selimi, and Jakup Krasniqi, who received prison sentences ranging from 13 to 25 years.
The ruling sparked angry reactions in Kosovo, where Thaci's supporters gathered in the capital Pristina to follow the reading of the verdict and express their rejection of it, while the legacy of the Kosovo War and its independence in 2008 remains a source of tension between Pristina and Belgrade.
