The collision of Indian and Pakistani warships in the sea has raised concerns about a return of tensions between the two neighboring countries in South Asia, according to Bloomberg.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs stated today (Wednesday) that the chargé d'affaires at the Pakistani High Commission was summoned to the ministry, which lodged a strong protest against what it described as "the unacceptable and unprofessional behavior of Pakistani naval units at sea, which led to a collision with a unit of the Indian Navy," adding that the incident did not cause "significant damage," without providing further details.
A government official in New Delhi, in a text message sent to reporters, stated that a Pakistani warship collided with an Indian Navy vessel in international waters north of the Arabian Sea on Tuesday evening, indicating that the Indian ship was conducting a routine surveillance mission when the Pakistani vessel approached it at high speed, without providing further details.
Relations between the two nuclear-armed countries have remained tense since the deaths of 26 people, mostly tourists, in an attack that occurred in the Indian-controlled region of Kashmir last year, pushing the two countries to the brink of full-scale war.
The maritime incident comes at a time when the escalating conflict between the United States and Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz is disrupting global energy supplies, increasing concerns about the security of navigation and the freedom of movement of ships in the waters surrounding the Arabian Sea.
