British scientists have identified a natural biological mechanism that helps the body to end inflammation, such as arthritis, heart diseases, and some immune-related disorders. This discovery could lead to new treatments for chronic inflammatory diseases affecting millions worldwide.
Preventing the excessive growth of a type of blood cell
According to a study conducted by researchers from University College London (UCL), there is a group of small lipid molecules called "epoxide oxylipins" that are part of the process of stopping inflammation. They help prevent the excessive growth of a type of white blood cell known as "intermediate monocytes," which can support healing in the short term but may contribute to chronic inflammation if they accumulate in large numbers. The experts conducted an experiment to study a direct process in humans, which found that increased levels of "epoxide oxylipins" helped alleviate pain more quickly and sharply reduced the number of intermediate monocytes in the blood and tissues.
Safer treatments
The study's author from the Department of Ageing, Rheumatology, and Regenerative Medicine at the college, Dr. Olivia Bracken, stated that the results reveal a natural pathway that limits the harmful expansion of immune cells and helps to calm inflammation more quickly. Targeting this mechanism could lead to safer treatments that restore immune balance without broadly suppressing immunity. It is worth noting that inflammation is one of the most important defensive responses of the immune system, helping the body fight infections and repair damaged tissues. However, if this response continues for too long, it may start to harm healthy tissues and contribute to conditions such as arthritis, heart disease, and diabetes.
