Wildfires that broke out in the Brunsa-a-Nova area, central Portugal, have burned approximately one thousand hectares, at a time when dozens of municipalities in the country remain at extreme or very high risk of fire outbreaks.
Preliminary Estimates
The mayor of Brunsa-a-Nova, João Lobo, reported that preliminary estimates indicate that about 900 hectares were burned in the Algueto da Beira fire and around 100 hectares in the Atalaya fire, explaining that the damage assessment will also include losses to agricultural areas, warehouses, and farming equipment.
The two fires broke out last Monday, with a gap of about three and a half hours between them, before the Atalaya fire reached the containment stage yesterday, while the Algueto da Beira fire reached the same stage early today.
According to the latest report from the Portuguese Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests, Portugal recorded 6,910 fires from the beginning of January to the end of August, burning 67,130 hectares, a decrease of 73.5% in the burned area compared to the same period in 2025, despite a 6.7% increase in the number of fires.
