The incident of a police officer shooting a pet donkey inside a farm in the state of Georgia, USA, has sparked widespread controversy, especially as the incident was linked to a search for a missing 12-year-old girl, culminating in a lawsuit against Officer Trenton Garner in federal court.
According to the lawsuit, the officers entered the fenced area of the Rockmart farm without a search warrant or the property owner's consent, before one of them shot the donkey (Hee-Haw) and killed it, despite the owner's account stating that it was calm and non-aggressive. The farm owner accuses the officer of using unjustified deadly force and violating her constitutional rights, seeking damages of up to five million dollars.
However, the police report provided a completely different account, as Officer Garner asserted that the donkey charged towards the search team and the K-9 unit, and did not retreat despite attempts to drive it away using a stun device, prompting him to fire a single shot to protect the team members. According to the report, the animal retreated up the hill before succumbing to its injuries.
The farm owner states that the police left the scene without informing her of the animal's whereabouts, forcing her to search for it at night accompanied by a minor until she found it. The lawsuit includes three constitutional violations related to illegal search, unconstitutional seizure of property, and deprivation of property without due process.
Following the incident, the farm owner launched a fundraising campaign to establish a foundation named after the donkey (Hee-Haw) and support animal care at the farm, with donations exceeding $159,000, surpassing the initial goal of $30,000, with contributions from over 2,200 donors.
