Western media revealed on Monday that the United States intends to increase diplomatic pressure on Iran by proposing to refer Tehran to the Security Council due to its obstruction of the work of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors.
Bloomberg reported that according to a draft of the American proposal, the referral of Iran to the United Nations Security Council is expected to be discussed this week during a meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors in Vienna. The American proposal calls for urgent action regarding Iran's non-compliance with IAEA decisions and its refusal to allow nuclear inspections.
The agency reported that it is unlikely that China and Russia will support any new action against Tehran, considering that referring the file to the Security Council could lead to the imposition of economic sanctions or a mandate for military action.
The IAEA announced at the beginning of September that Iran continues to prevent inspectors from accessing its nuclear facilities, with no signs of an imminent agreement between Tehran and Washington to end their ongoing six-month conflict. It confirmed that its inspectors are still unable to verify the location or status of Iran's stockpile of enriched uranium.
In contrast, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baqaei stated today that his country will respond if the IAEA adopts a resolution against it, explaining during a press conference in Tehran that it is illogical for European countries to seek a UN resolution against Iran given that the war with the United States has made access to nuclear facilities difficult.
