Costa Rica's President Laura Fernandez predicted that the deployment of American ground troops on her country's territory would contribute to enhancing national security, while also confirming that there are no concrete plans being prepared with Washington, and that any step of this kind would require legislative approval.
In statements regarding reports about the possibility of Washington launching a ground operation on Costa Rican territory, Fernandez said that it "would be extremely beneficial for national security if it pertains to pursuing a common goal against transnational crime, cross-border drug trafficking, and transnational terrorism."
She clarified that she is not considering asking Congress to declare a state of emergency or suspend constitutional guarantees to address the wave of violence, noting the decline in murder rates in her country in recent months.
In a related context, judicial data showed a 14% decrease in murder rates in Costa Rica during the first half of this year compared to the same period last year, after reaching a record level of 17.2 murders per 100,000 inhabitants in 2023, which is double the rate recorded a decade ago.
Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump had called on Costa Rica to join the "Shield of the Americas" coalition, which aims to combat drug cartels.
Costa Rica and the United States have been cooperating for years on security issues, including the implementation of joint maritime patrols.
