The U.S. Central Command announced (on Tuesday) the disabling of the navigation mechanism on the cargo ship Villa Nova, which flies the Panamanian flag, while it was attempting to cross the Gulf of Oman and breach the U.S. blockade imposed on Iran by sailing towards an Iranian port.
The U.S. Central Command, "CENTCOM," stated in a press release that an American helicopter of the "MH-60" model fired two Hellfire missiles at the ship's engine room after its civilian crew ignored repeated warnings from U.S. forces.
It noted that the ship stopped sailing towards Iran, breaching the U.S. blockade, which remains fully in effect. The Central Command mentioned that since August 11, it has redirected 55 commercial vessels that attempted to breach the blockade, disabled 3 non-compliant ships, and boarded two other vessels. "CENTCOM" pointed out that U.S. forces operating in the Middle East maintain a high level of vigilance, readiness, and lethal combat capability.
Meanwhile, an American military intelligence assessment reported that Iran's strategic priority has shifted from its nuclear program to controlling the Strait of Hormuz.
According to NBC News, U.S. officials familiar with the assessment stated that it concluded Tehran now views the strait as a stronger and more effective leverage point than its nuclear file, especially after the strikes that targeted its nuclear facilities in earlier stages of the conflict.
Military officials informed President Donald Trump that any U.S. military operation to fully control the strait would be long, costly, and bloody, with no guarantee of success. One official noted that the military plans prepared for such an operation estimate a high number of casualties among U.S. forces, which has been a key factor in Trump's discussions with his advisors regarding the next steps towards Iran.
Three European officials and two Arab officials agreed with this assessment, indicating that attempting to forcibly open the strait would be a risky operation that could expose U.S. warships to strikes from cruise missiles or drones, along with an additional rise in oil prices without a guarantee of achieving a clear victory. According to the network, the Trump administration responded to the assessment by stating that "the Strait of Hormuz is under the complete control of the U.S. Navy, and the blockade we impose... nothing passes to Iran unless we want it to, and nothing will pass except after a deal or total surrender."
An administrative official added that the strait is an international waterway and is not controlled by any entity, and that any temporary passages would be free of approvals or fees. Maritime traffic in the strait has sharply declined compared to before the war, with only 17 ships crossing over the weekend, compared to about 100 ships daily that used to carry around 20% of global oil and gas supplies.
