أعلن الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب، اليوم (الثلاثاء)، أن محادثات أجراها مع نظيره الروسي فلاديمير بوتين، أسفرت عن الإفراج عن روبرت غيلمان، الجندي السابق في مشاة البحرية الأمريكية، الذي كان يقضي عقوبة في أحد السجون الروسية منذ أكثر من أربع سنوات.
وقال ترمب في منشور عبر منصة «تروث سوشال» إن روسيا وافقت على الإفراج عن غيلمان لأسباب إنسانية، مضيفاً أن واشنطن تثمن القرار، وأن موسكو لم تطلب أي شخص في المقابل ولم يتم أي تبادل للسجناء.
وأوضح ترمب أن غيلمان، وهو جندي سابق في مشاة البحرية الأمريكية، في طريقه إلى الولايات المتحدة، ومن المقرر أن يصل إلى قاعدة أندروز قرب واشنطن، حيث سيستقبله ممثلون عن الإدارة الأمريكية.
بدورها، ذكرت وزارة الخارجية الأمريكية أن الإفراج عن غيلمان لم يكن جزءاً من عملية تبادل، ولم يتضمن تقديم أي تنازلات من جانب واشنطن، مبينة أن الحكومة الروسية أفرجت عنه «لدواعٍ إنسانية».
وقال وزير الخارجية الأمريكي ماركو روبيو إن غيلمان سيعود إلى بلاده للانضمام إلى أسرته بعد أكثر من أربع سنوات في روسيا، معرباً عن شكره لروسيا على تعاونها مع ستيفن ويتكوف المبعوث الخاص للرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب، في تأمين إطلاق سراح غيلمان، وعلى السماح له بتلقي العلاج الطبي اللازم في الولايات المتحدة.
وأضاف أن إدارة واشنطن ستواصل السعي لإطلاق سراح جميع الأمريكيين الذين تعتبرهم مسجونين ظلماً في الخارج، بمن فيهم المواطن الأمريكي ستيفن هوبارد، الذي أدين في روسيا بتهمة القتال إلى جانب القوات الأوكرانية.
وكان غيلمان قد حُكم عليه في روسيا عام 2022 بالسجن أربع سنوات ونصف السنة بعد إدانته بالاعتداء على شرطي، قبل أن تمتد عقوبته لاحقاً إلى 10 سنوات على خلفية اتهامات باستخدام العنف ضد عاملين في السجن، لكن واشنطن تعتبره محتجزاً تعسفياً.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced today (Tuesday) that talks he held with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin resulted in the release of Robert Gilman, a former U.S. Marine who had been serving a sentence in a Russian prison for more than four years.
Trump stated in a post on the "Truth Social" platform that Russia agreed to release Gilman for humanitarian reasons, adding that Washington appreciates the decision and that Moscow did not request anyone in return and no prisoner exchange took place.
Trump clarified that Gilman, a former U.S. Marine, is on his way to the United States and is expected to arrive at Andrews Air Force Base near Washington, where he will be welcomed by representatives of the U.S. administration.
For its part, the U.S. State Department stated that Gilman's release was not part of an exchange process and did not involve any concessions from Washington, indicating that the Russian government released him "for humanitarian reasons."
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that Gilman will return to his country to join his family after more than four years in Russia, expressing gratitude to Russia for cooperating with Stephen Witkoff, the special envoy of U.S. President Donald Trump, in securing Gilman's release and for allowing him to receive necessary medical treatment in the United States.
He added that the Washington administration will continue to seek the release of all Americans whom it considers wrongfully imprisoned abroad, including American citizen Stephen Hubbard, who was convicted in Russia for fighting alongside Ukrainian forces.
Gilman was sentenced in Russia in 2022 to four and a half years in prison after being convicted of assaulting a police officer, before his sentence was later extended to 10 years on charges of using violence against prison staff, but Washington considers him to be arbitrarily detained.
