Ten Malian soldiers were killed today (Sunday) in an attack targeting an army base in the city of San, claimed by a group linked to the terrorist organization Al-Qaeda.
Agence France-Presse reported from security and local sources that the attackers temporarily took control of the camp, noting that the initial toll was around 10 military casualties.
A local source confirmed the casualties among Malian forces, without specifying a final toll, indicating that the army later managed to regain control of the site, and assessments of the losses are ongoing.
Local residents reported that the attacks began in the early hours of the morning, with loud explosions heard and intense, ongoing gunfire exchanged.
For its part, the Malian army provided a partially different account of the attack, stating in a statement that its position in San was subjected to an attempted attack around 5:30 AM.
It indicated that the armed forces responded forcefully and managed to repel the attackers, confirming that the situation was brought under control without announcing a toll of losses on its side.
Meanwhile, the group "Support for Islam and Muslims," affiliated with the terrorist organization Al-Qaeda, claimed responsibility for the attack, asserting that it had completely taken control of a Malian army barracks in the city of San, located in the Segou region of central Mali.
The attack comes less than a month after one of the deadliest operations against the Malian army in recent times.
At least 50 soldiers were killed in the north of the country on July 18, following an attack on an army convoy carried out by a coalition that included militants from "Support for Islam and Muslims" and members of the "Azawad Liberation Front."
Mali has been facing a prolonged security crisis since 2012, with the activity of armed groups linked to Al-Qaeda and ISIS, in addition to local armed groups and Tuareg movements demanding independence.
