في خطوة لقيت ترحيباً وفرحة واسعة، وقّع وزير الخارجية السوري أسعد الشيباني قراراً قضى بإعادة العشرات من الدبلوماسيين الذين انشقوا خلال سنوات الحرب عن نظام الأسد، واصطفوا إلى جانب الثورة.
ورحب الشيباني بالدبلوماسيين المنشقين في العاصمة دمشق خلال استقباله لهم قائلاً: «أنتم أهلنا ولكم الأولوية».
وأعرب عدد من المشاركين عن فرحتهم بتلك العودة إلى العمل ودعم المسيرة الدبلوماسية السورية، مؤكدين أن هذا القرار يشكل تعويضاً معنوياً مهماً لهم.
وذكر مدير إدارة المنظمات الدولية في وزارة الخارجية سعد بارود أن عدد الدبلوماسيين بلغ 19.
وشملت لائحة أسماء الدبلوماسيين العائدين كلاً من: رئيسة بعثة قبرص سابقاً لمياء الحريري، والقائم بأعمال السفارة السورية في لندن سابقاً خالد الأيوبي، والدبلوماسي في بعثة سورية بجنيف سابقاً داني بعاج، والدبلوماسي السابق باسل نيازي، وآخرين.
وانشق عدد من الضباط والدبلوماسيين عن نظام الأسد خلال سنوات الحرب الـ14 بعد تصاعد حملة القمع الدامية التي طالت معارضين وأودت بحياة الآلاف من السوريين، فيما زج بآخرين في السجون والمعتقلات وتمت تصفية بعضهم بحسب منظمات حقوقية.
In a step that received wide welcome and joy, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani signed a decision to reinstate dozens of diplomats who defected during the years of war from the Assad regime and sided with the revolution.
Al-Shaibani welcomed the defected diplomats in the capital, Damascus, during their reception, saying: "You are our people, and you have priority."
Several participants expressed their happiness at this return to work and support for the Syrian diplomatic process, affirming that this decision represents an important moral compensation for them.
The Director of the International Organizations Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Saad Baroud, mentioned that the number of diplomats reached 19.
The list of returning diplomats included: former head of the Cyprus mission, Lamia Al-Hariri; former chargé d'affaires at the Syrian embassy in London, Khaled Al-Ayoubi; former diplomat at the Syrian mission in Geneva, Dani Baaj; former diplomat Basel Niazi; and others.
Several officers and diplomats defected from the Assad regime during the 14 years of war after the escalation of the bloody crackdown that targeted opponents and claimed the lives of thousands of Syrians, while others were thrown into prisons and detention centers, with some reportedly being executed according to human rights organizations.
