After nearly 10 years of being detained without trial, the Lebanese judiciary today (Friday) released Hannibal, the son of the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, in exchange for a financial bail of $11 million.
The French news agency reported that a Lebanese judicial source stated: "The investigating judge in the case of the kidnapping and disappearance of Imam Musa al-Sadr, Judge Zahir Hamada, agreed to release Hannibal Gaddafi in exchange for a bail of $11 million and ordered him to be prohibited from traveling."
For his part, Hannibal Gaddafi's lawyer said that the defense would appeal the financial bail of $11 million. French lawyer Laurent Bayon explained that conditional release on bail is completely unacceptable in a case of arbitrary detention like this. We will appeal the bail, noting that his client is subject to international sanctions and cannot secure this amount.
It was reported by the newspaper "L'Orient-Le-Jour" last Saturday from a knowledgeable source that Hannibal will appear on Friday before the Court of Cassation in Lebanon (the Supreme Court) presided over by Zahir Hamada, marking the first time he has appeared before the Lebanese judiciary.
It is worth mentioning that Hannibal Gaddafi was detained in Lebanon in December 2015 after being kidnapped from Syria and handed over to the Lebanese authorities, where he was charged with "withholding information" related to the disappearance of Imam Musa al-Sadr and his two companions in Libya in 1978, despite being just two years old at the time.
Since his detention, he has remained held for more than ten years without trial or a judicial ruling against him, which has raised local and international criticism regarding the length of detention and delays in legal proceedings.
