Two members of the U.S. Congress, Chris Van Hollen and Jeff Merkley, visited the Rafah crossing and aid warehouses in the Sinai Governorate today (Saturday), following a tour that included Israel, the West Bank, and Jordan.
The members confirmed that the purpose of the visit was to advocate for the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza, emphasizing that there is an urgent need for it amid worsening famine.
They also stressed the necessity of continuing calls for an immediate ceasefire and the release of all prisoners without delay, explaining that they heard what they described as "pure propaganda" from the Israeli side regarding the aid delivery process, but they stated that the reality on the ground is completely different, as only small amounts of aid are getting through to the sector, despite there being enough food to feed the residents of Gaza for three weeks in the warehouses of the World Food Program alone.
During their visit to Israel, the two Congress members - both of whom belong to the Democratic Party - inspected the World Food Program warehouses there, as well as the Kerem Shalom crossing and the Ashdod port.
Van Hollen stated that only 20 containers are allowed to exit daily from the warehouses due to what he described as "a cumbersome and deliberate process to obstruct the entry of aid," while Merkley clarified that they heard rosy statements at the Kerem Shalom crossing claiming that aid was reaching Gaza without obstacles, but the reality was completely different, with little aid getting through.
For his part, an official from the World Food Program revealed that the program received 2,200 food containers equivalent to 40,000 metric tons of food ready to enter Gaza.
