The Lebanese are anticipating, today (Tuesday), a government session expected to be held at the presidential palace to discuss the handover of Hezbollah's weapons and limiting them to the state. The session, which will be attended by ministers from Hezbollah and its ally, the Amal Movement, has been described by deputies and politicians as "historic."
In a tweet on his account on the X platform, Deputy Michel Douaihy confirmed that "the upcoming Cabinet session today is not ordinary by any measure, and it should not be downplayed or trivialized; it is a historic and fateful test that transcends politics as we know it, rising above the logic of cleverness and circumvention that has characterized Lebanese political life for decades."
Meanwhile, Deputy Mark Daou stated that Hezbollah has become fearful of a government session that would end its illegitimacy. He said: "It is time for everyone to return to the authority of legitimacy." Deputy Strida Geagea from the Lebanese Forces said: "Today, the Cabinet is setting the general policy of the state in all areas and making the necessary decisions to implement it, especially in the field of security and national defense."
Former Deputy Faris Saeed emphasized that the state "is implementing a Lebanese national decision that aims to assert its sovereignty over all Lebanese territory, supported by the international and Arab community."
A number of Hezbollah's allies announced their support for limiting the weapons, including the head of the "Free Patriotic Movement," former Minister Gebran Bassil, who was one of its most prominent supporters, as well as the Marada Movement. Deputy Tony Franjieh stated that everyone should rally around the logic of the state and the army, affirming that betting on the state is what will save Lebanon. He said, "What we need is to limit the weapons to the state and the army."
While awaiting the anticipated session, units of the Lebanese army spread across several areas in anticipation of any security tensions or incursions by Hezbollah supporters.
It is noteworthy that Hezbollah had previously announced that it would not hand over its weapons unless Israel withdraws from the five points it still occupies on the Lebanese-Israeli border.
