In a move that sparked controversy in political and legal circles, the U.S. Senate approved the appointment of judge and former television host Jeanine Pirro as the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, one of the most prominent judicial positions in the United States.
The confirmation came yesterday (Saturday) with a majority of 50 votes to 45, after former President Donald Trump urged the Republican-controlled Senate to expedite the voting process over the weekend.
Trump appointed the 74-year-old Pirro to this position temporarily last May, describing her as a "woman like no other," adding her to a long list of television personalities he brought into his administration.
It is noteworthy that Jeanine was born to parents from Lebanon, who immigrated to New York in their youth. She gained fame for hosting "Judge Jeanine Pirro" from 2008 to 2011, and then "Justice with Judge Jeanine" on Fox News for 11 years, and she co-hosted "The Five" on the same channel before dedicating herself to her temporary judicial position.
Pirro joins other media figures who previously held government positions during Trump's administration, such as Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, both of whom have television media backgrounds.
Pirro's appointment did not go without objection, as Democratic Senator Dick Durbin harshly criticized the decision, calling it "superficial" and asserting that Pirro "should not be a permanent U.S. Attorney."
He noted that Pirro promoted conspiracy theories regarding the 2020 election that Trump lost and authored pro-Trump books, including "Liars, Leakers, and Liberals," which the Washington Post described as "sycophantic."
It is worth mentioning that her ex-husband, Albert Pirro, was convicted of tax evasion while she served as a district attorney in New York, but Trump granted him a pardon during his first term.
