The Syrian Foreign Ministry advisor in charge of the chemical weapons file, Ibrahim Al-Albi, confirmed that the Israeli airstrikes on Damascus are hindering efforts to locate and destroy the stockpile of chemical weapons that belonged to the regime of former President Bashar Al-Assad.
Al-Albi revealed that a visit scheduled for inspectors from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons has indeed been postponed. He stated that the organization will hold an urgent meeting next Tuesday to discuss the situation and the impact of the Israeli attacks. He added that the Syrian Ministry of Defense has provided the necessary institutional infrastructure to organize and secure visits for the inspectors from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.
Israel launched airstrikes on Damascus on Wednesday, destroying part of the Ministry of Defense headquarters and carrying out shelling near the presidential palace.
It is worth noting that since last March, inspectors have visited previously undisclosed sites for the production and storage of chemical weapons in preparation for the mission to destroy the remnants of the illegal stockpile held by the Assad regime. The transitional Syrian government has pledged to eliminate the chemical weapons.
Meanwhile, the Turkish presidency reported that President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and his Syrian counterpart Ahmad Al-Shara discussed the Israeli attacks on Damascus in a phone call today (Thursday).
The presidency added that Erdoğan informed Al-Shara that the Israeli attacks are unacceptable and pose a threat to the entire region, and that Ankara welcomes the ceasefire that has been reached with the Druze.
