لم تُقلل هديةٌ مفاجئة منحها المستشار الألماني فريدريش ميرتس للرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب، في أول لقاء بينهما، من وقع تعليق محرج.
وأهدى ميرتس ترمب نسخة مؤطّرة ومذهّبة من شهادة ميلاد جدّ الرئيس الأمريكي، خلال أول لقاء مباشر بينهما في البيت الأبيض، أمس الأول (الخميس)، بحسب تقرير لصحيفة «نيويورك بوست».
الهدية المغلّفة بإطار ذهبي، والتي تعكس أسلوب الزخرفة المميز في المكتب البيضاوي، كانت بمثابة تكريم لفريدريش ترمب، جدّ الرئيس، الذي وُلد في مدينة كالشتات الألمانية عام 1869، قبل أن يهاجر إلى الولايات المتحدة لاحقًا.
وعلّق ترمب على الهدية قائلًا: «هذه ألمانية حقيقية».
وأضاف: «أشكرك على هذه الهدية. إنها جميلة. شكرًا جزيلًا. رائعة. سنضعها في مكانٍ مُشرّف».
لكن اللقاء بين الزعيمين، والذي عُقد أمام مجموعة من الصحفيين والمسؤولين، اتّخذ منعطفًا محرجًا، حين قال ترمب للسياسي المحافظ إن يوم الإنزال في النورماندي – حين غزت قوات الحلفاء شواطئ فرنسا لتحرير أوروبا من الحكم النازي في 6 يونيو 1944 – «لم يكن يومًا سارًّا» لألمانيا.
وقد جاءت هذه العبارة الغريبة خلال مناقشة الزعيمين للصراع المستمر منذ ثلاث سنوات بين روسيا وأوكرانيا، مما دفع ميرتس إلى تصحيح الوقائع التاريخية، بحسب الصحيفة الأمريكية.
وقال ميرتس: «اسمح لي أن أذكّرك أن أمس هو السادس من يونيو»، في إشارة إلى الذكرى الـ81 لإنزال النورماندي خلال الحرب العالمية الثانية، مضيفًا: «هذه ذكرى يوم الإنزال، عندما أنهى الأمريكيون الحرب في أوروبا».
لكن ترمب قاطعه مرتين ليُكرر تعليقه الغريب.
فقال ميرتس مُصحّحًا: «على المدى البعيد، سيادة الرئيس، كان هذا تحريرًا لبلادي من الديكتاتورية النازية. ونحن نعلم أننا مدينون لكم، وهذا هو السبب في قولي إن أمريكا باتت مجددًا في موقع قوي لفعل شيء بشأن هذه الحرب وإنهائها. فلنتحدث عمّا يمكننا فعله معًا، ونحن مستعدّون لبذل ما في وسعنا».
وفي وقت لاحق، شبّه ترمب الرئيس الروسي فلاديمير بوتين، والرئيس الأوكراني فولوديمير زيلينسكي، بـ«أطفال يتشاجرون في ساحة اللعب»، مضيفًا أن الأمر «قد يتطلّب وقتًا أطول قبل أن نُفرّق بينهما».
A surprise gift presented by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to U.S. President Donald Trump during their first meeting did not lessen the impact of an awkward comment.
Merz gifted Trump a framed and gilded copy of the birth certificate of the U.S. President's grandfather during their first direct meeting at the White House the day before yesterday (Thursday), according to a report by the "New York Post."
The gift, wrapped in a golden frame that reflects the distinctive decorative style of the Oval Office, was a tribute to Friedrich Trump, the President's grandfather, who was born in the German city of Kallstadt in 1869 before later emigrating to the United States.
Trump commented on the gift, saying, "This is real German."
He added, "Thank you for this gift. It's beautiful. Thank you very much. Wonderful. We will place it in a prominent place."
However, the meeting between the two leaders, which took place in front of a group of journalists and officials, took an awkward turn when Trump told the conservative politician that D-Day – when Allied forces invaded the beaches of France to liberate Europe from Nazi rule on June 6, 1944 – "was not a happy day" for Germany.
This strange remark came during the leaders' discussion of the ongoing three-year conflict between Russia and Ukraine, prompting Merz to correct the historical facts, according to the American newspaper.
Merz said, "Allow me to remind you that yesterday was June 6," referring to the 81st anniversary of D-Day during World War II, adding, "This is the anniversary of the landing when the Americans ended the war in Europe."
But Trump interrupted him twice to repeat his strange comment.
Merz corrected him, saying, "In the long run, Mr. President, this was a liberation of my country from Nazi dictatorship. And we know we owe you, and that’s why I say America is once again in a strong position to do something about this war and end it. Let’s talk about what we can do together, and we are ready to do our part."
Later, Trump compared Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to "children fighting in a playground," adding that it "might take longer before we can separate them."
