Despite U.S. President Donald Trump's confirmation of a good relationship with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, recent days have seen tension between them, suggesting that the "honeymoon" may be coming to an end. Observers believe that the U.S. president is increasingly moving to pressure Moscow in order to push it towards reaching an agreement on a ceasefire with Ukraine.
The Wall Street Journal reported that several people close to the U.S. president indicated he is considering imposing sanctions on Russia this week, amid his growing frustration with the ongoing Russian attacks on Ukraine and the slow pace of peace talks between the two countries. Sources familiar with Trump's thinking revealed that he has grown weary of the peace negotiations and is contemplating abandoning them altogether if the latest attempt does not yield positive results.
Last Sunday, Trump hinted at the possibility of imposing new sanctions on Russia. He said of Putin: "He is killing a lot of people... I don't know what has gotten into him?".
White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt stated that President Trump made clear his desire to see a negotiated peace agreement, but he kept all options on the table wisely, as she put it.
The Kremlin commented that Trump's criticisms would not affect the process of prisoner exchanges between Washington and Moscow.
Observers fear that relations between the United States and Russia may deteriorate again, after having seen a noticeable improvement since Trump returned to power last January.
It is worth noting that Trump has repeatedly affirmed since taking office that he is capable of ending the Russian-Ukrainian war, describing his relationship with his Russian counterpart as very good.
Washington initiated mediation months ago to stop the war between Kyiv and Moscow, and U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff visited Russia about four times, during which he met with the Russian president.
More than a week ago, a Russian-Ukrainian meeting was held in Istanbul, but it did not achieve any significant political breakthrough except for an agreement on the exchange of hundreds of prisoners between the two countries.
