تعيش البرازيل أجواءً متوترة قبيل محاكمة الرئيس السابق جايير بولسونارو المقررة غدا (الثلاثاء)، إذ كثفت السلطات إجراءات المراقبة خشية محاولته الهرب من الإقامة الجبرية التي يخضع لها منذ أسابيع.
بولسونارو الذي يواجه تهماً بالتخطيط لانقلاب بعد خسارته انتخابات 2022 أمام منافسه اليساري لويس إيناسيو لولا دا سيلفا، يقيم في منزل فاخر داخل مجمع سكني مغلق في العاصمة برازيليا، وهو مزود بسوار إلكتروني لمتابعة تحركاته. غير أن المحكمة العليا سمحت للشرطة بتشديد الحراسة حول منزله بعد تحذيرات من احتمال فراره عبر منازل مجاورة مستغلاً «الثغرات العمياء» التي لا يرصدها السوار.
ورغم عدم وجود معلومات استخباراتية عن خطة هروب وشيكة، قالت مصادر أمنية إن مخاوف السلطات زادت بعد محاولات نجله للضغط على البيت الأبيض للتدخل، على غرار ما فعله الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب هذا الصيف حين هدد البرازيل بعقوبات دفاعاً عن حليفه.
ولم يخل المشهد خارج منزل بولسونارو من الحضور الشعبي؛ فقد تجمّع أنصاره حاملين الأعلام البرازيلية والأمريكية، مطالبين بالعفو عنه ومهاجمين القاضي ألكسندر دي مورايش الذي يشرف على القضية. ولجأ بعضهم إلى الصلاة تحت شمس الظهيرة الحارقة، أملاً في «معجزة» تنقذ زعيمهم.
وتكشف التحقيقات عددا من الوثائق في هاتف بولسونارو تشير إلى مساعٍ لطلب اللجوء لدى الرئيس الأرجنتيني خافيير ميلي، فضلاً عن لجوئه سابقاً لسفارة المجر في برازيليا، ما يعزز الشكوك حول نواياه. ويواجه الرئيس السابق اتهامات بالتشكيك في نتائج الانتخابات، ومحاولة تقويض القضاء، والتخطيط لإعطاء سلطات استثنائية للجيش، إضافة إلى شبهات بضلوع مقربين منه في مخطط لاغتيال الرئيس لولا والقاضي مورايش.
من جانبه، نفى بولسونارو أي دور في محاولة انقلاب أو مؤامرات اغتيال، مؤكداً أنه بحث فقط عن «سبل دستورية» للبقاء في السلطة، بينما يصر على أن الانتخابات سُرقت منه من دون تقديم أدلة.
Brazil is experiencing a tense atmosphere ahead of the trial of former president Jair Bolsonaro scheduled for tomorrow (Tuesday), as authorities have intensified surveillance measures for fear he might attempt to escape from the house arrest he has been under for weeks.
Bolsonaro, who faces charges of plotting a coup after losing the 2022 elections to his leftist rival Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, is residing in a luxurious home within a gated community in the capital Brasília, equipped with an electronic bracelet to monitor his movements. However, the Supreme Court has allowed the police to tighten security around his home following warnings of a potential escape through neighboring houses, exploiting "blind spots" that the bracelet does not detect.
Despite the lack of intelligence information about an imminent escape plan, security sources said that authorities' concerns have increased following attempts by his son to pressure the White House for intervention, similar to what former U.S. President Donald Trump did this summer when he threatened Brazil with sanctions in defense of his ally.
The scene outside Bolsonaro's home was not devoid of public presence; his supporters gathered holding Brazilian and American flags, demanding his pardon and attacking Judge Alexandre de Moraes, who oversees the case. Some resorted to praying under the scorching midday sun, hoping for a "miracle" to save their leader.
Investigations reveal a number of documents on Bolsonaro's phone indicating efforts to seek asylum with Argentine President Javier Milei, as well as his previous approach to the Hungarian embassy in Brasília, which raises suspicions about his intentions. The former president faces accusations of questioning the election results, attempting to undermine the judiciary, and planning to grant extraordinary powers to the military, in addition to suspicions of involvement by close associates in a plot to assassinate President Lula and Judge Moraes.
For his part, Bolsonaro denied any role in the coup attempt or assassination plots, asserting that he only sought "constitutional means" to remain in power, while insisting that the election was stolen from him without providing evidence.
