The Portuguese Bruno Lage, coach of Al-Dhariyah, confirmed that the draw against Abha was a fair result in light of the match's events, noting that his team faced some difficulties during the first half before improving their performance in the second half.
He said that Al-Dhariyah lacked the necessary confidence at the beginning of the match and lost many balls easily, which affected the team's ability to build play as usual, especially given that they were playing at home and in front of their fans.
He added: "In the second half, our performance improved, we played with more energy, we changed some things in how we handled the ball, and we succeeded in creating several chances. I believe that the draw in the end is a fair result."
Lage explained that the tactical change between the two halves aimed to give his players more space when in possession and improve the quality of play with the ball, confirming that the team became more capable of creating chances after the change.
He said: "We need to develop, and that’s why we changed our style of play when we have the ball, to find more space. It was clear that we created more chances after the change, and our possession quality improved in the second half."
Lage pointed out that the coaching staff succeeded during the first two months of work in building a cohesive team defensively, confirming that the upcoming phase will see greater focus on developing the attacking side.
He added: "In two months, we built a strong and organized defensive team, and now we need to develop the other side of our play, which is the side we love more, and I personally love, and that is what we do when we have the ball."
The Portuguese coach praised the collective work of his players, explaining that Al-Dhariyah defends as a unit and enjoys a good spirit in the dressing room, in addition to having fast elements in the front line that help execute attacking transitions.
Regarding Al-Dhariyah's goals at this stage, Lage emphasized that the focus is on developing the team and increasing harmony among the players, as well as treating each match as a new opportunity to collect points until the end of the first round.
He confirmed that the Saudi league is characterized by tough competition, and that match results confirm there are no easy encounters, noting that the pressure of playing every three or four days adds another challenge for teams and players.
Lage addressed the impact of match pressure on technical performance, indicating that the proximity of match dates may reflect on the players' energy and the quality of performance on the field.
He said: "The quality of matches may decline somewhat because players cannot play with the same energy under the pressure of matches and fatigue."
At the same time, the Al-Dhariyah coach preferred not to elaborate on the scheduling of matches, confirming that the press conference is not the appropriate place to discuss this issue, and that it is a matter that does not concern his team alone.
Lage concluded his remarks by emphasizing that the end of the first round will be a time to evaluate the phase, by looking at the number of points Al-Dhariyah has collected and the extent of the team's development, before setting a realistic and clear goal for the next phase in coordination with the management and in line with the aspirations of the club's fans.
