The head of the International Monetary Fund expert team, Ron van Roden, who recently visited the Syrian capital, Damascus, confirmed that the recovery of the Syrian economy is accelerating.
He noted that by 2025, the economy began to regain its strength, driven by improved consumer and investor confidence following the political change, the return of about 1.5 million refugees, and Syria's gradual reintegration into the regional and global economies, which helped offset the negative impact of severe drought on growth that harmed the agricultural sector. The expert team expressed its gratitude to the Syrian authorities for the transparent and constructive discussions, and for the hospitality received during the visit.
Strong Recovery
Growth rates are expected to reach double-digit levels in 2026 (over 10%) despite the ongoing conflict in the region, driven by a strong recovery in the agricultural sector due to improved rainfall rates, the expansion of hydrocarbon production, improved electricity supplies, and continued growth in the trade and services sectors. Economic activity is also supported by the ongoing return of refugees, a significant increase in the number of visitors, and, more generally, the reform policies pursued by the authorities aimed at restoring macroeconomic stability and achieving a strong recovery led by the private sector. Growth is expected to remain strong in 2027. However, this growth remains uneven across regions, while poverty remains widespread, although it has somewhat decreased.
