أعلن وزير التجارة الدولية وشؤون العلاقات الحكومية الدولية في كندا دومينيك لوبلان اليوم أن الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب ورئيس الوزراء الكندي مارك كارني سيجريان على الأرجح محادثات خلال الأيام القليلة القادمة.
يأتي ذلك بعدما فرضت واشنطن رسوماً جمركية بنسبة 35% على سلع لا يشملها الاتفاق التجاري بين الولايات المتحدة والمكسيك وكندا.
وأضاف لوبلان، وهو الوزير المسؤول عن ملف التجارة بين الولايات المتحدة وكندا بالحكومة الفيدرالية، لشبكة (سي.بي.إس نيوز) أن المحادثات التي أُجريت أخيراً منحته تشجيعاً، مشيراً إلى اعتقاده بأن التوصل إلى اتفاق لخفض الرسوم الجمركية لا يزال خياراً مطروحاً.
وقال لوبلان، في إشارة إلى وزير التجارة الأميركي هوارد لوتنيك والممثل التجاري الأميركي جيميسون جرير: «المحادثات مع الوزير لوتنيك والسفير جرير منحتنا التشجيع، لكننا لم نصل بعد إلى نقطة تسمح بالتوصل إلى اتفاق يصب في مصلحة اقتصادي البلدين».
وأشار إلى أنه يتوقع أن يتحدث كارني وترمب خلال الأيام القليلة القادمة. وأردف قائلاً: «نعتقد أن هناك خياراً للتوصل إلى اتفاق يمكن أن يُخفض بعض هذه الرسوم الجمركية ويوفر قدراً أكبر من اليقين للاستثمارات».
يذكر أن الممثل التجاري الأمريكي جيميسون جرير أعلن اليوم أن من المرجح أن تبقى الرسوم الجمركية التي فرضها الرئيس دونالد ترمب الأسبوع الماضي على عشرات الدول كما هي بدلاً من خفضها في إطار المفاوضات المستمرة.
وقال جرير في تصريحات لشبكة «سي.بي.إس»: «إن هذا لن يكون هو الحال في الجولة الأحدث من الرسوم الجمركية». وأضاف: «يتحدد الكثير من هذه الرسوم وفقاً للاتفاقات، وبعض هذه الصفقات مُعلن وبعضها غير مُعلن، والبعض الآخر يعتمد على مستوى العجز أو الفائض التجاري الذي قد يكون لدينا مع البلد، ومعدلات الرسوم الجمركية هذه ستظل ثابتة إلى حد كبير».
وكان ترمب قد رجَّح أخيراً أن يفرض رسوماً جمركية شاملة تراوح بين 15% و20% على واردات الولايات المتحدة من الدول التي لم تُبرم اتفاقيات تجارية منفصلة مع واشنطن.

International Trade and Government Relations Minister of Canada, Dominic LeBlanc, announced today that U.S. President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney are likely to engage in talks in the coming days.
This comes after Washington imposed a 35% tariff on goods not covered by the trade agreement between the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
LeBlanc, who is the minister responsible for trade relations between the United States and Canada in the federal government, told CBS News that the recent discussions have encouraged him, noting his belief that reaching an agreement to reduce tariffs is still a viable option.
LeBlanc stated, referring to U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and U.S. Trade Representative Jamison Greer: “The talks with Secretary Lutnick and Ambassador Greer have encouraged us, but we have not yet reached a point that allows for an agreement that serves the economic interests of both countries.”
He indicated that he expects Carney and Trump to speak in the coming days. He added, “We believe there is an option to reach an agreement that could reduce some of these tariffs and provide greater certainty for investments.”
It is worth noting that U.S. Trade Representative Jamison Greer announced today that the tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump last week on dozens of countries are likely to remain unchanged rather than being reduced in the ongoing negotiations.
Greer stated in remarks to CBS: “This will not be the case in the latest round of tariffs.” He added, “Much of these tariffs are determined by agreements, some of which are announced and some are not, and others depend on the level of trade deficit or surplus we may have with the country, and these tariff rates will largely remain stable.”
Trump had recently suggested that he might impose comprehensive tariffs ranging from 15% to 20% on U.S. imports from countries that have not entered into separate trade agreements with Washington.
