The Egyptian director Kamla Abu Zekry expressed her objection to the increasing prevalence of artistic works that address murder crimes and serial killers, considering that repeatedly presenting crimes on screen may have negative effects on some viewers, especially young people.
Warning Against Repeating Crime Stories
Kamla Abu Zekry stated in a post on her Facebook account that works that retell horrific crimes or focus on characters associated with murder may lead, in her view, to a normalization of violence and perhaps make crimes a source of excitement and thrill.
She added that there are examples of films that dealt with crime and violence, noting that some young people, as she mentioned, have engaged in actions similar to what they saw in those works.
“I Don’t Understand the Justification for Their Spread”
The director clarified that she does not see a clear justification for the significant spread of this type of work, especially dramas that focus on serial killers and murder crimes, emphasizing that she does not understand the purpose of presenting some of these works or expanding on them.
Kamla Abu Zekry stressed in her remarks that her position regarding crime dramas represents a personal opinion, amid the increasing number of works that address incidents of crime and violence and present them to the audience in various cinematic and dramatic formats.
The Impact of Crime Dramas
Kamla Abu Zekry's criticisms come in conjunction with the spread of short dramatic works inspired by real criminal incidents and files, including the series “The Full Story,” which consists of 15 episodes distributed over 5 tales, including “Hell Game” and “Bani Mazar,” and addresses real crimes within a dramatic framework.
