While his artistic echo resonates throughout the Arab world, Moroccan artist Saad Lamjarred found himself behind the walls of one of the most terrifying and historic prisons in France. Following a final appellate ruling sentencing him to ten years in prison, Lamjarred was placed in the cells of the infamous "Fresnes" prison located in the southern suburbs of Paris, closing the chapter on his freedom and beginning a new and harsh phase of his legal journey.
Fresnes prison is not just an ordinary penal institution; it is a monument that carries a heavy bloody memory dating back to the late 19th century. During the Nazi occupation, the prison transformed into a terrifying detention center for resistance fighters and Allied spies, witnessing the most horrific methods of torture and executions at the hands of the Gestapo. After liberation, it became the site of the last famous guillotine executions in the French capital before the death penalty was completely abolished in the early 1980s. Over the decades, the cells of this complex have hosted some of the most dangerous leaders of organized crime and controversial figures.
Despite its unique architectural design, which was considered a global architectural model, the prison today suffers from suffocating structural crises, the most notable of which is the terrifying overcrowding that exceeds 170% in the men's wings. Its strict security management also faces ongoing challenges related to smuggling contraband via drones and dropping packages over the high walls, prompting authorities to implement modern procedures that meet contemporary security requirements.
The placement of Saad Lamjarred in Fresnes prison comes after a long series of transfers between the most famous prisons in France since his case in 2016, making this historic stronghold the station where he begins to serve his heavy sentence amidst widespread anticipation for his artistic and legal future.
