Promises of investment in European real estate and real estate projects within Kuwait ended with financial losses amounting to millions of dinars and judicial rulings, after investigations revealed a scheme that used investment portfolios, companies, and fictitious projects to seize citizens' money.
The Court of Cassation, First Circuit, sentenced a Kuwaiti citizen to 6 years in prison and fined him 1,115,000 dinars after convicting him of defrauding several citizens and seizing their money by misleading them into purchasing chalets and investing in fictitious real estate portfolios in Britain, Germany, and Switzerland, in addition to promoting non-existent projects within Kuwait.
The Public Prosecution charged the defendant with fraud and money laundering after he deceived his victims into believing he owned companies, lands, real estate projects, and investment portfolios abroad, claiming that there were huge sums of money to be transferred to Kuwait to establish companies and implement projects that would generate profits.
Victims' testimonies revealed the extent of the amounts seized, as one of them paid 1 million dinars to an external real estate portfolio, and 2,150,000 dinars to participate in a real estate company, while another lost 150,000 dinars after being misled into believing he was purchasing land to build a chalet, only to find out that the defendant did not own it.
For his part, the officer in charge of the case at the Anti-Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing Department of the State Security Agency confirmed that investigations revealed the defendant used schemes, contracts, debt acknowledgments, and fictitious projects to lend credibility to his alleged investments and convince the victims of achieving profits.
Investigations showed that there were no assets or properties for the companies that were promoted, and that the promised projects were not executed nor were the funds returned to their owners, while cash was used in an attempt to conceal and disguise its illicit source.
