The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations' application was subjected to a large-scale cyber attack, during which the attackers managed to send false information to the public, while technical teams began working to address the security vulnerability and restore the service, as announced by the ministry on Monday and reported by the TASS news agency.
The ministry stated that the attack targeted its mobile application, allowing the attackers to exploit it to spread misleading information among users, noting that specialists are working to eliminate the security vulnerability and return the application to its normal state.
In an important development, the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations confirmed that the attack did not affect the national warning system, and that the systems for alerting the public about risks and emergencies continue to operate normally.
The ministry clarified that the breach of the application cannot affect the main warning system, which relies on multiple means to deliver alerts to citizens, including sirens, loudspeakers, text messages, as well as television and radio broadcasts.
The authorities urged citizens to remain calm and not rely on suspicious messages, and to refer to the official website of the ministry and its verified accounts for information related to emergencies.
So far, Moscow has not announced the identity of the party responsible for the attack, nor has it disclosed the exact number of users who received the false information or the extent of the technical breach, while confirming that the situation is being monitored and efforts are ongoing to restore the normal operation of the application.
This attack comes in a notable development coinciding with a similar cyber intervention affecting the air raid warning application in Ukraine, where false warnings and information about alleged radiological and nuclear threats appeared.
The Ukrainian Air Force announced that there is no radiological threat, indicating the possibility that the "Air Alert" application was hacked or subjected to hostile interference, while the Ukrainian Strategic Communications Center accused Russia of being behind the misleading messages.
In contrast, Moscow announced that the Ministry of Emergency Situations' application was subjected to a wide-scale attack, without officially accusing any specific party, and the potential connection between the two incidents remains unclear.
