Republicans received unexpected support in the U.S. Senate race in Michigan after Democratic Representative Haley Stevens announced her endorsement of Republican candidate Mike Rogers just two days before the midterm elections, a move that sparked division within the Democratic Party.
Stevens' stance came after she lost the competition for the Democratic nomination to Abdul Sayed, who polls reported by the "Real Clear Politics" platform indicate is leading Rogers by about four points.
The Democratic representative justified her decision by stating, "There is no place for me in Abdul's campaign," criticizing Sayed's positions and holding him responsible for a statement issued by an outside committee that accused Israel of causing rising food prices in the United States.
In contrast, President Donald Trump welcomed Stevens' announcement and urged her to join the Republican Party, while Rogers described her endorsement as a "brave" step, highlighting the significance of support he received from a figure belonging to the opposing party just hours before voters headed to the polls.
Stevens' position did not go without repercussions within the Democratic ranks, as it sparked a division in the party, amid reports of several staff members in her congressional office resigning due to her stance on the Democratic nominee who won the party's nomination, Muhammad.
These developments are particularly significant as the Michigan race is part of the broader competition for control of the Senate, with both parties seeking to secure contested seats in the midterm elections, which serve as a political test for the Trump administration two years after the presidential elections.
This coincided with other developments in the Senate race in Alaska, where a federal judge rejected a lawsuit filed by the U.S. Department of Justice to prevent certification of the election results if Republican Senator Dan Sullivan lost, due to the presence of another candidate with a similar name on the ballot.
The Trump administration had sought to halt the certification of results if Sullivan lost, arguing that the similarity of the candidates' names could confuse voters and affect the outcome of the vote. However, Judge Sharon Gleason dismissed the lawsuit, stating that the Department of Justice lacked the legal standing to file it.
The Battle for Control of Congress
These developments come in the context of the U.S. midterm elections scheduled for Tuesday, November 3, which include competition for all 435 seats in the House of Representatives, along with 35 seats in the Senate.
The Senate elections are particularly important as they will determine the balance of power in the chamber during the second half of Trump's term, affecting the U.S. administration's ability to pass legislation, appointments, and pursue its political agenda.
Michigan is considered one of the key states in this battle, with Republican candidate Mike Rogers competing against Democrat Abdul Sayed for the seat currently held by outgoing Democratic Senator Gary Peters.
Sayed had narrowly defeated Stevens in the primary election after a campaign that saw sharp disagreements over U.S. support for Israel, while a statement issued by an outside political group sparked additional controversy after linking U.S. aid to Israel with rising living costs in the United States. Sayed denied any connection between his campaign and the statement or his endorsement of its content.
