Travelers at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago did not expect their wait for flights to turn into an unusual encounter with a free-roaming green bird, which invaded the airport lounge and began chasing passengers, landing on their heads and bags, before their initial curiosity turned into confusion and attempts to distance themselves from it, in a scene that lasted for hours and ended with an unexpected intervention from a cleaning worker.
Video clips documented the bird as it moved among travelers near the check-in counters of "Air France," navigating between the barriers separating the lines and bags, in an incident that quickly transformed from a scene that piqued passengers' curiosity to a state of confusion inside the lounge.
One airport worker, who recorded the incident, stated that the chaos lasted for hours. He explained that passengers were initially impressed by the bird, but its behavior changed when some tried to approach it, as it began to act aggressively and peck at the people around it.
Witnesses speculated that the bird might be a parrot species, noting that it was missing feathers around its neck. According to the worker, the bird entered the airport lounge through a door that was left open, while several attempts to catch or control it failed.
However, the incident came to an end thanks to a cleaning worker, who managed to control the bird using her shirt, before taking it to a veterinarian for examination and to check if it had a microchip that could help identify it or reach its owner.
In a separate incident at Miami International Airport, authorities arrested a man named Hernandez Castillo after a search revealed he was hiding ten live birds inside six cylindrical plastic containers placed under his clothing.
The seized birds included eight "yellow-faced grass finches" and two "blue grosbeaks." The man was charged with smuggling goods in connection with the incident.
