The controversy between CR Belouizdad and Nigeria's Enugu Rangers escalated following the first leg of the second preliminary round of the CAF Champions League, which ended with the Nigerian team winning 2-0 on Sunday, October 18, in the city of Abeokuta, amidst mutual accusations and complaints regarding fans, refereeing, and the conditions of receiving the Algerian delegation.
Rangers announced that they had filed a complaint with the Confederation of African Football (CAF), accusing some CR Belouizdad fans of vandalizing seats in the stands, damaging one of the stadium gates, and entering without paying ticket fees. The Nigerian club demanded that the return match, scheduled for Friday, October 23, in Algeria, be held without fans, in addition to opening an investigation and taking necessary security measures. They stated that they attached photos and videos of the alleged damages to their complaint, requesting guarantees for the protection of their delegation during the return match.
In contrast, the management of CR Belouizdad rejected holding their supporters responsible for the damages, asserting that they had evidence proving that the seats were damaged before the match started. They also criticized the refereeing decisions, particularly the penalty awarded to Rangers, which they deemed unjustified, and the second yellow card that led to the expulsion of their player Osama Ben Hawa, noting that his teammate Ayoub Ghazala was the one who committed the foul in the incident in question.
The Algerian club also spoke about the harassment faced by their delegation in the VIP area of the "MKO Abiola" stadium, and about their photographer being forced to change his shooting angle during the live broadcast of the match on "YouTube." They also criticized the ticket price, which they said reached $20.
In a parallel development, the Algerian newspaper "Compétition" reported that the president of CR Belouizdad, Mohamed Arabi Yaakoubi, requested that the club officials take action with CAF to express their reservations regarding the refereeing and the reception conditions in Nigeria.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has not issued any official decision regarding Rangers' complaint or their request to hold the return match without fans, as both teams prepare for the decisive encounter scheduled for Friday, October 23, where CR Belouizdad seeks to compensate for their 2-0 loss in the first leg and secure a qualification spot, amidst anticipation of the outcomes of the clubs' actions with the continental body.
