Dutchman Erik ten Hag, the former manager of Manchester United, revealed new details regarding his conflict with Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo, accusing him of not adhering to physical and training requirements, and confirming that his decisions were based on the team's interests.
Ten Hag stated in an interview with The Athletic that Ronaldo let the team down and let him down personally, explaining that he had made his plans upon taking over the club in 2022 based on the presence of the player, who is considered one of the greatest stars in football history.
The Dutch coach claimed that Ronaldo was withdrawing from some training sessions and did not meet the required physical standards. He cited the training sessions he imposed following United's 4-0 loss to Brentford in August 2022, noting that the player completed only two out of three planned laps.
He added that he spoke with him repeatedly about the necessity of moving on the field and reaching the penalty area, considering that a lack of physical readiness limited his ability to run, whether during the team's possession of the ball or when losing it. He also accused him of encouraging some teammates to conserve effort during training.
The relationship between the two deteriorated in October 2022, after Ronaldo refused to come on as a substitute against Tottenham and left the field before the end of the match. In November, the player publicly criticized the coach and the club, leading to the termination of his second stint with Manchester United by mutual consent, before moving to Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia.
In another context, Ten Hag revealed that the club's management did not fulfill its promises regarding support and communication, expressing his disappointment over the sale of Scott McTominay to Napoli despite his request to keep him.
Ten Hag was dismissed in October 2024, after leading United to victory in the EFL Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.
