A video clip of a nine-month-old Chinese baby climbing the steps of a mountain in Hubei province in central China has sparked widespread controversy on social media, with some viewing the scene as an exciting experience for skill development, while others consider it an unnecessary risk at such an early age.
The infant appeared in the video wearing knee pads while being closely monitored by his mother during his ascent, in a scene filmed at a mountain resort, and it garnered over 200,000 likes and 17,000 comments on one of the short video platforms, according to (SCMP).
His father, who goes by the name (Huang), stated that this was his son's first experience climbing mountains, but he began training to climb stairs when he was six months old and was able to climb stairs on his own by the time he reached eight months. He added that the family enjoys outdoor activities and that the child seems happier when he is outdoors.
The father explained that the goal was not to train the child to climb but to help him expend his energy, noting that the experience positively affected his mood, as he fell asleep quickly after returning home.
The video elicited mixed reactions among viewers, with some expressing concern about allowing a child of that age to climb mountain steps, while others felt that the experience encourages children to explore their surroundings under parental supervision.
The parents confirmed that they are keen on their child's safety during outdoor activities and advise parents wishing to engage in similar experiences to closely monitor their children, choose easy paths, and use appropriate safety gear, indicating that they plan to take him on mountain trips every two weeks, with camping experiences coming soon.
