Hours after intensive search operations at sea, the U.S. Coast Guard has concluded its efforts to find six people who were on board a medical transport plane that crashed off the coast of Nantucket Island in Massachusetts, in a tragic incident whose full circumstances are still unclear.
The Coast Guard announced on Sunday that it had suspended search operations after using aircraft and ships to scour vast areas of the region, following the late Saturday discovery of wreckage from a Gulfstream plane that was en route to Boston from Bermuda.
Admiral Matthew Lake, commander of the Northeast region of the Coast Guard, stated in a press release: "It is not easy to make the decision to suspend the search," expressing his sincere condolences to the victims' families and thanking the agencies and organizations that participated in the search and rescue efforts.
According to data from the flight tracking website "FlightAware," the plane registered to "Latitude Air Ambulance" took off from Bermuda at 12:41 AM local time on Saturday, on a flight destined for Logan International Airport in Boston.
Officials reported that the plane was carrying four Canadian citizens and two individuals from Bermuda, while no additional details about the identities of the passengers or crew members have been released so far.
AUDIO footage published by the local "Boston 25" station captured the moment when the air traffic controller at Logan Airport attempted to communicate with the plane's pilot, asking if he was declaring an emergency, but the pilot did not respond to the call.
