A routine athletic training session for a group of high school students in New York turned into a shocking moment when they accidentally discovered human remains in a Long Island park, raising questions about the identity of the deceased and the circumstances of their death.
The students from the track team found skeletal remains while running in "Plandome Pond" park in the Manhasset area, after a strange object in the bushes caught the attention of one student, who holds the rank of "Eagle Scout."
The student quickly realized that what he saw could be human remains, prompting him and his teammates to notify emergency services, which arrived at the scene and began the necessary procedures.
Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder stated that initial data suggests the remains belong to a woman, while the forensic office continues its examinations to officially determine her identity.
Although the identity of the owner of the remains has not yet been confirmed, police are considering the possibility that they belong to Shi Hua Zhou, a 79-year-old woman suffering from dementia, who went missing after leaving her home in December 2025.
This possibility was bolstered after it was revealed that the last known location where the elderly woman was seen was only about four miles from the site where the remains were found.
Authorities also presented the woman's family with a piece of clothing found near the remains, and family members stated that they recognized it as belonging to Zhou, but they are awaiting the results of official forensic tests to confirm the identity of the remains definitively.
While authorities continue their examinations and investigations to uncover the identity of the deceased and the circumstances of her death, police confirmed that, based on the information available so far, they do not suspect any criminal activity behind the death.
