Cinnamon is no longer just a spice added to drinks and desserts; it has transformed in recent years into a common ingredient in dietary supplements, with increasing interest in its potential effects on blood sugar, heart, and brain health.
However, recent scientific reviews paint a more balanced picture between promising metabolic benefits and limited evidence regarding the brain, along with an important warning related to the type of cinnamon and the amount consumed.
Limited improvement in blood sugar
According to the PubMed journal, analyses of randomized trials have shown that cinnamon supplements may help patients with type 2 diabetes lower fasting blood sugar and improve insulin resistance.
A review that included 24 trials concluded with positive results in these two indicators, while another analysis of 16 trials found a decrease in fasting blood sugar and insulin resistance index, without a clear improvement in glycated hemoglobin or lipids.
A review published in the Journal of Health in January 2025 indicated improvements in glycated hemoglobin and body mass index with cinnamon consumption, but did not find improvements in inflammation markers.
Researchers suggest that some of its effects may be related to enhancing cellular response to insulin and increasing glucose absorption.
What about the heart and cholesterol?
In a review published in July 2025 that included 49 studies, cinnamon consumption was associated with increased levels of good cholesterol (HDL), leading researchers to consider it a potential adjunct in addressing some risk factors for heart disease.
However, its effects on blood pressure, weight, and other metabolic indicators remain under discussion, and the benefit appears clearer among individuals with diabetes or metabolic syndrome, according to recent reviews.
Cinnamon benefits for the brain
As for the discussion about cinnamon's role in enhancing memory or preventing diseases like Alzheimer's, it is still in its early stages. A systematic review in the Nutritional Neuroscience journal examined around 40 studies, most of which found positive results in learning and memory, but the vast majority were conducted on cells or animals.
Laboratory experiments have shown that cinnamon compounds may affect the accumulation of proteins associated with Alzheimer's disease, but human evidence remains extremely limited, meaning cinnamon cannot be considered a proven means of protecting the brain.
The risk in the type of cinnamon
Here, an important point emerges; not all types of cinnamon are equal. Cassia cinnamon, which is the most common, contains high levels of coumarin, a compound that can cause liver damage when consumed in large amounts and for extended periods.
The European Food Safety Authority sets the acceptable daily intake of coumarin at 0.1 mg per kilogram of body weight.
According to the German Institute for Risk Assessment, a person weighing 60 kilograms could reach this limit by consuming only about two grams of medium-coumarin cassia cinnamon daily.
In contrast, Ceylon cinnamon contains much lower levels of coumarin, making it a more suitable option for regular consumption.
The French Agency for Food Safety (ANSES) recommends that the amount of coumarin from dietary supplements should not exceed 4.8 mg daily for an adult weighing 60 kilograms, and advises individuals with liver diseases to avoid products rich in cinnamon.
