A routine surgical procedure at a hospital in Turkey turned into a legal case after a patient claimed that the medical team operated on his left ear, despite the health issue being in the right ear, forcing him to undergo a second operation on the same day to correct the mistake.
The incident began when Murad Tarakci, a resident of the Gebze area, went to Okan University Hospital in Tuzla after suffering from ear pain.
According to his account, tests revealed a fluid buildup in the right middle ear, which necessitated a medical intervention and the placement of a tube to drain the fluids.
However, after waking up from anesthesia, Tarakci was surprised to feel severe pain in his left ear, as reported by Turkish media.
He said he asked the person who was moving his bed after the operation about which ear had been operated on, only to be informed that the surgery had been performed on the left ear.
Immediately, the patient informed the medical staff that the intervention had been done on the wrong side, emphasizing that the tests and medical documents indicated the right ear as the site of the problem.
According to his account, the surgical team was called back after the mistake was discovered and was informed of the urgent need for another intervention. Indeed, Tarakci returned to the operating room on the same day and underwent general anesthesia for the second time to have the operation on the right ear.
The patient stated that what happened put him in an unexpected situation, as he had to undergo two surgical procedures and general anesthesia twice within hours, when he was supposed to have only one intervention.
Tarakci noted that after the two operations, he began to suffer from persistent ringing and buzzing, along with a decline in hearing and balance issues.
For his part, the patient's lawyer, Hakan Yildiz, announced the initiation of legal proceedings against the hospital and the concerned doctor, considering that the incident falls under what is medically and legally known as "wrong-site surgery."
Yildiz explained that all medical documents indicated the right ear as the site of the required intervention, confirming that complaints had been filed against the hospital and the doctor.
He added that the current procedures involve awaiting approval from the Turkish Ministry of Health to begin the judicial investigation into the case, while the concerned parties are anticipating the outcomes of the investigations regarding the circumstances of the incident and the responsibilities arising from it.
