Hours after the court ruling against Moroccan artist Saad Lamjarred was issued in France, where the Court of Appeal in Créteil (southeast of Paris) sentenced him to ten years in prison in a case dating back to 2016, messages of support from several Moroccan artists flooded social media platforms.
Support Messages Pour In
Dounia Batma was among the first artists to react to the judicial development, as she posted a message on her (Instagram) account expressing her solidarity with Lamjarred, wishing him and his family patience and strength during the upcoming phase.
Artist Hind Sedassi also joined the list of those reacting, sending a message to Lamjarred and his family, expressing her wishes for them to have patience and strength, describing the ruling as "heavy," according to reports from Moroccan media.
For her part, artist Najat Rajoui sent a message to Lamjarred's family and his wife Ghaitha, wishing him relief and the ability to overcome the judicial phase he is going through, while artist Hatim Ammor announced his support for his colleague, praying for him and his family to have patience and strength.
As for artist Zainab Osama, she chose to express her stance directly, posting a picture with the phrase "We are all with Saad Lamjarred," accompanied by a message discussing her relationship with the artist and his journey in Moroccan music.
These stances came just hours after the appellate ruling in Créteil, which sentenced Lamjarred to 10 years in prison with an order for him to be incarcerated. This new ruling is harsher than the sentence issued against him in the first trial in 2023, when he was sentenced to six years in prison.
Lamjarred Maintains His Innocence
The case dates back to 2016 when a young French woman accused Lamjarred of raping her in a hotel room in Paris. In February 2023, the Paris Criminal Court convicted him and sentenced him to six years in prison, before he appealed the ruling and was retried before the Court of Appeal in Créteil.
During the appeal phase, the public prosecutor requested a prison sentence of eight years, before the court issued a ruling of ten years. The decision also included an order to incarcerate Lamjarred, while the prosecution indicated that the conviction included an aggravating circumstance related to his being under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.
In contrast, Lamjarred still maintains his innocence, and his defense team announced its intention to appeal the ruling before the French Court of Cassation, meaning that the case has not yet reached its final judicial stage.
As the case enters a new judicial phase, the ruling quickly reflected on the Moroccan artistic community, where the accounts of several artists turned into spaces for messages of condolence and support, in a scene that highlighted the significant presence Lamjarred has in the Arab artistic scene, and the wide interaction that has accompanied the developments of his case since its inception.
