A report by NBC News revealed that eight U.S. Marines were injured on September 14, due to an Iranian cruise missile attack targeting a ship they were working on in the Strait of Hormuz, in an incident that U.S. authorities did not officially announce at the time it occurred.
The network reported from three U.S. officials that the injuries were not serious, explaining that the soldiers were exposed to smoke inhalation and exhibited symptoms consistent with a concussion, including headaches, raising the possibility of traumatic brain injuries.
It was reported that the injured, consisting of seven soldiers and one officer, returned to duty shortly after the attack, as they were part of a landing team belonging to a Marine battalion and were not aboard a U.S. Navy ship.
Officials did not disclose the name, type, or ownership of the ship, merely describing it as a "maritime vessel." The U.S. Department of Defense did not announce that its forces were attacked in the area on that day, while a spokesperson for U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) declined to comment on the incident, and the Department of Defense referred inquiries regarding the attack to Central Command.
According to the report, the injuries of the eight soldiers were added to the Pentagon's Defense Injury Analysis System about ten days after the attack occurred. The system's data, as of Wednesday, recorded 861 injuries among U.S. military personnel during the war with Iran.
An American official explained that delays in recording some injuries are common, especially in cases related to brain injuries, as symptoms may not appear immediately, in addition to the fact that the database is not updated in real-time. The publicly available records do not include details about the location, timing, or circumstances surrounding the injuries.
The revelation of the incident comes at a time when the Strait of Hormuz is witnessing ongoing military and security escalation, coinciding with U.S. measures aimed at limiting Iran's ability to use the strategic waterway, while Washington accuses the Iranian Revolutionary Guard of continuing to target ships in the region.
