What began as limited reports of missing property inside a hospital quickly revealed similar incidents in other healthcare facilities. As the reports were tracked and evidence reviewed, the police found themselves facing an investigation that extended to five health centers, culminating in 65 charges against a 34-year-old woman, while authorities continue to search for potential victims who have not yet come forward.
The Ontario Provincial Police in Canada have laid 65 charges of theft and fraud against Naseem Iron, from Burlington, in connection with investigations involving incidents affecting patients and staff at several healthcare facilities.
According to reports from the BBC citing the police, the case began after receiving reports of thefts and fraud at healthcare facilities where the accused had previously worked. As the reports were reviewed, the investigation expanded to include incidents dating back to February 2024 and continued until recently.
The charges include 34 counts of fraud involving amounts under $5,000, 13 counts of theft for the same amounts, in addition to 7 counts related to non-compliance with court orders, along with charges of breach of trust and identity theft.
The police's actions began to widen last May after receiving reports of thefts inside the "Orillia Soldiers' Memorial" hospital.
As the investigation continued and evidence was examined, additional reports and incidents related to different healthcare facilities emerged. According to the police, the case involved five health centers where incidents occurred at different times between 2024 and 2026.
The list includes "Orillia Soldiers' Memorial" hospital, the Headwaters Health Care Centre, the Trillium Health Centre in Mississauga, St. Joseph's Health Centre, and West Park Healthcare Centre in Toronto.
During the investigation, the police conducted searches under judicial warrants, resulting in the seizure of several items suspected to be stolen.
Authorities are currently examining the seized items and comparing them with registered reports, aiming to identify their owners and link them to the incidents under investigation.
The police did not disclose details about the nature of the positions Iron held at the healthcare facilities, or the method by which the thefts and fraud are suspected to have been carried out.
Despite the 65 charges, the police continue to investigate, with the possibility that there are other individuals who have not reported being victims of theft or fraud.
Authorities have urged patients and staff who interacted with the five facilities to review their financial records and be alert to any unusual transactions or activities, and to report them if they raise suspicions.
The police confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, and that the charges against Iron remain part of the judicial process until the case is completed in court and the facts that can be proven are determined.
